Betty Glenn
Born Mary Elizabeth Hillis, on December 3, 1924, to Robert & Alice Hillis. Betty discovered the joys of growing up as a Professional Golfer’s daughter together with three brothers and a sister. Amid the green hills of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia they grew up exploring the countryside, as their father, Robert, instructed golfers, designed and maintained several golf courses. Their mother, Alice, ran the snack counter and raised the family. Under the watchful eye of her parents, Betty took up her position as a golf starter and caddy manager.
In their final years, Betty’s parents migrated to San Diego, where she had relocated to in 1950, along with husband and two small children. Betty’s care and devotion to her parents supported them until their deaths.
Betty’s brothers Bob, Claude and George preceded her in death. She is survived by her younger sister, Catherine Ritts of Pittsburg and youngest brother, James Hillis of Eugene, Oregon. Betty enjoyed watching their families and children blossom thought her years, as did her parents.
Betty’s enduring love and devotion also blessed the life of her husband of 62 years, Robert Glenn. Wed in 1947, in West Virginia, they both devoted life to their faith and family. Together they raised five children in Ocean Beach, CA. Marianne Cleveland, the oldest, lives in La Mesa, CA. Patricia Catsoulis, their youngest daughter, passed away in 1997. Christopher Glenn, their eldest son, also resides in La Mesa, CA, along with his wife Janine. Brian and John Glenn reside in Ocean Beach, CA, along with a daughter-in-law, Kate Howard. They supported Betty and her husband in her final days, as she requested in the sanctity of her home.
Betty and her husband are devout Catholic members of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, in San Diego. Betty coordinated her parish Legion of Mary Ministries. Her years of apostolic work included visitation of the sick or aged, educating children, Pilgrim Virgin Statue rotations, and meeting the spiritual needs of her parish community. Their love and prayers have been and will always be a blessing to her and her family.
Betty is also survived by: four grand-children Ria, Matt, Jamie and Whitney; along with four great grand-children. Her lesson in life for them is, “retreat not into sorrow and despair. Rather follow her enduring kind of love.” Her cat, Whiskers and Martin, the family dog will also miss Betty’s care and attention.
“How could anyone deny, that kind of love. Every heart is measured by that kind of love. Even stars fall from the sky. Everything will fall in time, except those things that cannot die. That kind of love. Oh, may you be remembered by that kind of love. “ Pierce Pettis, 2009

In reality, it was the day I could spend tme with someone who always took the time to listen to my problems and frustrations, who encouraged me and showed patient love and enduring kindness to me, to my children and to all others. Should there be strife with family members from this day forward, I will voice a reminder for the need of "Grandma's Grace" and know there will be peace and her legacy of love at that moment.

Aunt Betty is truly missed and loved... I always will remember my visits to Aunt Betty and Uncle Bob's house as a child. Aunt Betty always was so patient with children and had many special gifts for each child to make them feel special. She would find little tasks for the kids to help with and she always had very positive and encourging words. So happy my family got to visit with Betty recently and got to hear many lovely

I loved listening to your wonderful stories about growing up with my mom and all your brothers, around the golf course. You remembered everything. No matter how large our family gatherings were, you always had time to talk to us children, and when I grew up, to my children. You are very special to them, too. And you always sent them

And you always sent them birthday wishes. Your love and caring were never hidden. Like my mother told me, you were always there when someone had a need, and you will always be there, in our hearts. We love you. Cheryl, Charlie and Teddy

Pray that kind of love, embodies us and lives this day.
